Many applicants are asked to provide additional U.S. divorce-related documents during their interview at the Guangzhou Consulate. One of the most important documents is a certified copy of a final legal divorce decree (Figure 2: Guangzhou Consulate Interview Document Checklist).

So, how exactly do you request a certified copy?
Attorney Xiaozeng uses Lincoln County, Washington as an example and has organized the complete process. For detailed step-by-step instructions, check out Figures 3–11.
The process may vary slightly from county to county, but the overall procedure is generally the same:
1️⃣ Identify the county where the divorce was finalized
2️⃣ Locate the appropriate Clerk’s Office
3️⃣ Complete the application form
4️⃣ Pay the required fee
5️⃣ Wait for the paper document to be mailed to you
It’s recommended that you prepare the full names of both parties, the effective date of the divorce decree, the case number, and a valid form of identification in advance. Having these documents ready can significantly speed up the process.
The process itself isn’t complicated—the key is finding the right department. Hope this guide helps!
