✅ Five Things to Know After Receiving Your Immigrant Visa

Getting your U.S. immigrant visa does not mean the entire immigration process is over. There are still several important details to pay attention to before you travel.

1️⃣ Carefully Check Your Immigrant Visa

After your immigrant visa is approved, the visa will be placed inside your passport and returned to you.

Once you receive it, carefully check all personal information, including your name, date of birth, case number, and other details.

If you find any errors, contact the consulate immediately to request a correction. Don’t wait until right before your trip to discover a problem. (Figure 2)

2️⃣ Do NOT Open a Sealed Visa Package

If your visa package contains a sealed packet of documents, do not open it yourself. Keep it sealed and hand it over intact to the immigration officer at the port of entry.

If your visa page says “IV Docs in CCD,” it means there is no sealed document packet because your documents have been electronically transmitted to CBP. (Figure 3)

3️⃣ An Immigrant Visa ≠ Your Green Card

Receiving an immigrant visa does not mean you already have your physical Green Card.

Before entering the U.S., remember to pay the USCIS Immigrant Fee.

After you pay the fee and successfully enter the U.S., your Green Card will be mailed to the U.S. mailing address listed on your DS-260. (Figure 4)

4️⃣ Pay Attention to Your Visa Expiration Date

Receiving an immigrant visa does not mean you can travel to the U.S. whenever you want.

The visa has an expiration date, so be sure to complete your entry into the U.S. before the visa expires. (Figure 5)

5️⃣ Do You Need to Apply Separately for an SSN?

Whether you need to apply separately for a Social Security Number (SSN) depends on whether you selected the option to request an SSN when completing your DS-260.

⚠️ Important: An immigrant visa does not guarantee admission to the United States. It allows you to travel to a U.S. port of entry and request admission. The final decision on whether you may enter the U.S. is made by a CBP officer.
