H-1B Approval Notice | Law Firm Address ≠ Employer Address

When filling out Form I-539 (Application to Extend/Change Nonimmigrant Status), if you have had employment since your most recent entry into the U.S., the form may ask you to provide information such as:
✅ Whether you engaged in unauthorized employment
✅ Employment start and end dates
✅ Employer’s name
✅ Employer’s address
✅ Weekly salary, etc.
In many cases, we refer to the H-1B Approval Notice (Form I-797A) when completing the employer information. However, there is one particularly easy mistake to make:
❗ Do not automatically assume that the “law firm address” is the employer’s address.
For example, as shown in Figure 2, the address in the upper-left corner of an I-797B Approval Notice may actually be the Attorney/Representative’s address.

This is especially common when:
The company hires a law firm to file the H-1B petition
The law firm is listed as the mailing address
The approval notice is sent to the attorney’s office
In these situations, the address listed near the company’s name is not necessarily the company’s actual address.
👉 If you are unsure, it’s a good idea to Google the address and check whether it belongs to the law firm or to the actual employer.
✅ In general:
On an I-797A, the address listed under the “Petitioner” section in the lower-left corner is more likely to be the actual employer/petitioner’s address.

A wrong address does not necessarily mean you will immediately receive an RFE, but it can potentially create:
⚠️ Inconsistent information
⚠️ Confusion during adjudication
⚠️ A higher risk of follow-up questions or requests for evidence
Especially when completing forms such as I-539, I-485, DS-160, or an H-1B transfer petition, it is best to keep the information consistent across all filings whenever applicable.
